'Local Information'

Located on the fringe of the Lake District at the base of the Furness Peninsula on Morecambe bay, Ulverston is a market town with a Market Charter from 1066. Ulverston's famous names are Sir John Barrow, Secretary to the Admiralty and Explorer circa; mid 1600's, and Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy Fame who was born here.
In the 1800's, Ulverston was an extremely busy industrial town and was involved in the shipping of 'Iron Kidney Ore' from the mines at Lindal. It had many off shoot industries affiliated to shipping, and Ulverston Canal was the key to all of this. The demise of the canal came about with the introduction of the railway, and shipping from Ulverston went into steady decline, the canal now is a popular coarse fishing water. Ulverston is now popular for its known festivals such as the Dickensian Festival near Xmas, The summer carnival and the now famous Lantern procession. There is also a Real Ale festival and a flag festival and if we can get more I am sure we will.

While I am often seen around Ulverston, I walk my dogs all over the lake district, which you

can see from other pages on this site. This is good for the dogs exercise and keeps them very fit.
